How to Grow Vibrant Caladiums in Pakistan – Complete Guide

Caladiums are vibrant, colorful foliage plants that thrive across all regions of Pakistan. With proper care, their stunning leaves can brighten your garden from February all the way through December.

Botanical Background
Caladiums belong to the Araceae family. A well-known example from this family is the edible plant Eddoe. Their natural habitat is the rainforests of South America, which explains their preference for warm, humid environments and dappled light.

Ideal Soil & Growing Conditions

For Garden Beds:
Caladiums love partially shaded areas with well-draining soil. If your garden soil is heavy and retains water, improve drainage by mixing in:
• Coarse sand
• Well-rotted organic matter like leaf mold, cow dung manure, or vermicompost

Best Soil Type: Rich, well-drained sandy loam.

For Pots

Clay Pots:
• Use a 12-inch pot per bulb.
• Recommended soil mix:
 • 1 part loam (نہری بھل)
 • 1 part leaf mold or cow manure
 • ½ part coarse sand or coco peat
 • ½ part cow dung manure or vermicompost
• Mix thoroughly and add:
 • 1 tsp bone meal
 • 1 tsp single super phosphate

Plastic Pots:
• Use an 8 to 10-inch pot.
• Recommended soilless mix:
 • 2 parts coco peat or peat moss
 • ½ part pumice stone or perlite
 • ½ part leaf mold
 • ¼ part cow dung or vermicompost
• Add:
 • 1 tsp bone meal
 • 1 tsp single super phosphate

Tip: Once your bulbs begin to sprout (usually 4–6 weeks after planting), you can apply a diluted, balanced fertilizer like 20-20-20 NPK. Use in small quantities only.

Planting Depth: Cover bulbs with 1.5 inches of soil or medium.

Light Requirements
Caladiums thrive in partial shade. In very hot cities like Lahore, Multan, and Hyderabad, keep them in bright but indirect sun—especially from May onwards to avoid scorching.

How to Start Caladium Bulbs (Trick for Quick Sprouting)

  1. Take a shallow wooden box or wide clay pot (کنالی ٹائپ).
  2. Fill it with moist leaf mold.
  3. Place the bulbs on the surface and lightly mist them.
  4. Keep in a bright, shaded area.
  5. Mist regularly to keep the medium moist.
  6. When roots emerge, plant bulbs 3–5 cm deep in beds or pots.
  7. Water generously after planting. Growth should begin within 10–12 days.

Watering Tips
• Keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy, to avoid root rot.
• Spray the leaves regularly to promote healthy foliage—but never under direct sunlight to prevent burn.

End of Season Care
In colder regions (October/November) or warmer ones (December), caladiums enter dormancy.

Two options for bulb care:
1. Leave in the soil:
• Mulch with 2 inches of material like coco peat or dry pine needles.
• Stop watering during winter.
• Move pots indoors if temperatures drop too low.

2. Remove and store bulbs:
• Wash with clean water.
• Dip in fungicide.
• Dry completely.
• Store in dry sawdust, coco peat, or peat moss, in a dark and dry place.

• As a preventive measure, apply a fungicide drench and foliar spray once a month.

With just a little effort, you can enjoy the vibrant beauty of caladiums for most of the year. Happy planting!
