Quick Start Guide

Planting Time:

For Hot Areas (Lahore, Multan, Karachi):

  • Plant from February to May
  • Place in full sun if planting in February
  • Reduce direct sunlight as temperatures rise—avoid harsh afternoon heat (12 PM to 4 PM)

For Cooler/Hilly Areas (Murree, Abbottabad, Gilgit):

  • Start in February or March, after the last frost
  • Can plant bulbs until August

Watering:

  • Water lightly until shoots appear
  • Then water only when topsoil feels dry

Pot Size:

  • Clay Pots: 10–12 inch wide, with drainage hole
  • Plastic Pots: 6–8 inch, depending on bulb size
  • Clay pots are better for hot areas, plastic for cold regions

Soil Mixes

For Clay Pots:

  • 1 part loam
  • 1 part leaf mold or cow manure
  • ½ part coarse sand or coco peat
  • ½ part cow dung or vermicompost
  • Add: 1 tsp bone meal + 1 tsp single super phosphate

For Plastic Pots (Soilless Mix):

  • 2 parts coco peat or peat moss
  • ½ part pumice stone or perlite
  • ½ part leaf mold
  • ¼ part cow dung or vermicompost
  • Add: 1 tsp bone meal + 1 tsp single super phosphate

How to Plant

  1. Mix a fungicide (2.5g per liter of water)
  2. Soak bulb roots and basal plate for 10–15 minutes
  3. Place bulb with pointed side up
  4. Cover bottom ⅔ of bulb, leaving top ⅓ exposed
  5. Fill pot with prepared mix
  6. Water using the fungicide solution

First Fertilizer:

Use 20-20-20 NPK when growth starts (typically 5–6 weeks after planting)

Light & Temperature

  • Morning sunlight is ideal
  • Avoid 12 PM to 4 PM heat, especially in Punjab and Sindh
  • Ideal temperature: 20–35°C
  • Can tolerate up to 45°C if kept under trees or green netting

Post-Bloom Care

  • Allow foliage to grow—it helps store energy in the bulb
  • Reduce watering in winter to induce dormancy
  • In cold areas, stop watering by late autumn

In Very Cold Areas:

  • Either leave bulbs in the pot and bring indoors
  • Or dig up the bulbs, wash, dip in fungicide, dry thoroughly, and store

Storage Instructions:

  • Wash bulbs (optional)
  • Dip in fungicide
  • Dry thoroughly
  • Store in a cool, dry, dark place
  • Replant in February

Pest & Disease Control

  • Spray fungicide monthly (on leaves and soil)
  • Watch for aphids, mealybugs, snails
  • Use neem oil or soap spray for light infestations
  • For serious issues, consult a local garden expert

Bonus Tips

  • Repot bulbs every 3 years
  • Clay pots are ideal for hot climates due to breathability
